TOP 1 Oil Founder's Day

Today, in recognition of William A. Ryan’s birthday, we are proud to celebrate Founder’s Day, a day for showing our appreciation and reflecting on the man who built our business and who continues to serve as our inspiration.

William Ryan, known to his family, friends, and business associates as “Bill,” founded the TOP 1 Oil Products Company. A hard-working businessman with a positive personality and a pioneering spirit, Bill was working in the automotive aftermarket business in Asia in the early 1970s when he noticed a change in the business climate and decided to explore new opportunities.

At an age (56) when most of his friends and peers were considering retirement, Bill decided to start a new business and, over time, devised a business strategy for distributing automotive lubricants targeted at international markets. As Bill developed a lubricants business that sold a variety of brands, he began to notice that the brands he was selling lacked loyalty to their customers. This eventually led him to change his business model once again, which ultimately led to the formation of the TOP 1 brand.

Bill was known for being an enthusiastic and loyal businessman whose word was stronger than any written contract. Throughout his career, he maintained a philosophy of working together internationally with a range of partners, recognizing that having his own brand was not only a great opportunity for his personal success, but it was also an excellent opportunity for all who participated in TOP 1.

Bill Ryan ran the TOP 1 Oil Products Company from 1979 to 1999. In his 20 years as company president, he led the way for TOP 1 to grow into an internationally-recognized brand that is now sold in more than 50 countries around the world.

Today, three generations of Ryans are proud to carry on Bill’s legacy at TOP 1, where his entrepreneurial spirit and focus on quality, innovation, and partnership remain integral parts of the company’s success to this day.
